The 2023 Census of Population will now be based on a new "register-based" method of calculation, which will make it possible to find out the number of inhabitants and dwellings, as well as their main characteristics, on an annual and permanent basis. This means that changes in each of these data items can be calculated every year, without having to carry out an exhaustive survey, which until now has taken place every 8 years.

On these new bases, the resident population is 38,367 at 31/12/2023.

It breaks down as follows:

The total resident population was recomposed using different registers from the following administrative sources:

  • Monaco Town Hall for Monegasque nationals and births in Monaco ;
  • Direction de la Sûreté Publique for foreign residents over the age of majority (residence permit data);
  • Direction de l'Éducation Nationale, de la Jeunesse et des Sports for foreign 3-17 year olds attending school in Monaco.

The so-called remaining population, i.e. foreign minors aged 3 to 17 not attending school in the Principality and foreign children born outside Monaco between 2021 and 2023, is estimated on the basis of data from the 2016 Census, but represents only 2% of the total.

Population growth compared with the last General Census in 2016 was 2.8%.
